Channel your dog’s keen sense of smell and love of sniffing into an activity you can do together! K9 Nose Work isn’t an obedience-based activity. Instead, it works with your dog’s natural instinct to find scents. This activity is fun for any dog! From 8 weeks old to the senior years, all can participate! Scent work is excellent for increasing confidence for shy dogs. One dog is searching at time so this class is also suitable for dogs that tend to be uncomfortable around other dogs. Whether you want to compete….have fun…..enrich your dogs world…..enhance your handling skills….provide an outlet for your dog’s energy and drive…..all are welcomed!

What Is K9 Nose Work®?

K9 Nose Work is the fun search and scenting activity that all dogs and their people can enjoy. It’s also a nationwide competitive sport, organized and governed by the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW).

In K9 Nose Work, dogs learn how to search for a specific odor or odors and find the source. Dogs start by searching for their favorite food or toy reward hidden in a variety of environments, increasing the challenges and adding new search skills as the dog progresses. Most people will choose to have their dogs learn to find the target odors used in K9 Nose Work: birch, anise, and clove. Once target odors are introduced to the dog, they will search for the odor only and find its source, then get rewarded by their handler with their favorite food or toy reward.

K9 Nose Work introduces dogs to four different search elements: container, interior, exterior, and vehicles. Dogs build their hunt drive and learn foundational search skills in all four elements. Later stages of K9 Nose Work introduce advanced detection and handling skills to teams.

K9 Nose Work is an activity that uses real-world environments and can be done almost anywhere. Every search has the potential to be a dramatically different and highly stimulating experience for both dog and handler. By participating in K9 Nose Work with your dog, you’re giving your dog the freedom to express and refine their natural talents, and your dog is giving you a glimpse into how they “see” the world.

Some of the benefits of K9 Nose Work are:

  • Dogs easily burn lots of mental and physical energy doing searches
  • Searches can be done anywhere you can take your dog
  • No prior training is required
  • In classes, dogs work one at a time and rest crated or safely in their vehicle in between searches so reactive dogs can enjoy the activity, too
  • Shy and fearful dogs build confidence and overactive dogs put their energy into fun searches
  • Stronger bond between dog and handler as handler learns to observe, understand, and rely upon their dog

Nosework Foundation: This class introduces dogs to the world of nosework!  Your canine companion will thrive with a game that gives them the opportunity to use their strongest and most natural of senses!  One that far exceeds our capacity!  This growing sport let’s you become a student of your dog.  Great for all temperaments and breeds.  Older dogs retired from other sports continue to exercise their brains and bodies and younger dogs develop complex problem solving skills.  Dogs will stay in foundation with primary reward until ready to move onto odor which is typically two full 6 class sessions but may be longer depending on age and progress.  As teams progress we will work exterior, vehicle, interior and containers with primary reward developing the search skills needed when they do move to odor.

Introduction to odor : Dogs who have successfully completed Foundation of Nosework or with instructor permission will be introduced to the first odor found in current scentwork venues – birch.  This class returns to the foundation exercises used to introduce the game but now brings in odor.  Dogs will then build their searching skills for the target odor and develop the concept of odor obedience with meaningful reward reinforcement.

Continuing Odor: With successful Introduction to Odor, dogs are ready to move onto odor in a multitude of problem solving settings. This will include vehicle, exterior, interior, and containers.  Teams can begin to prepare for odor recognition tests or pre-trial tests required for competition in some organizations or just develop their skills for fun and personal growth! As skills develop, teams will be introduced to other odors targeted in competitions.

Competition Class.: for students that have completed all 4 levels or have instructor approval. ( need to be on at least one odor)
